A California judge declared that abstinence-only sex education is not the way to teach sex education. Finally someone gets it that abstinence-only sex ed; which is basically telling kids not to have sex ever, is not working. Teaching students what they need to know about safer sex doesn’t mean they’re going to copulate like rabbits.
Fresno County Superior Court Judge Donald Black’s decision is only effective in Fresno, Ca. but teaches that “teens deserve accurate health information,” says Phyllida Burlingame, director of Reproductive Justice Policy of the ACLU, who participated in the lawsuit. The ruling applies to middle and high school students, many who say the only sex education they get is through friends or watching porn, which does a great job of dispensing inaccurate sex education.
